Please join us this year for a stroll through Brighton’s past as we take you on a tour through some of our historic homes.
The first in our 2021 Tour of Historical Homes in Brighton is reported to be Brighton’s oldest house. Also known as the “James Richardson House,” 45 Division Street was built in 1809. This house is much smaller and less prominent than other century homes in Brighton, but it holds an important place in our history.
From the Brighton Digital Archives (who source MPAC; OLR Records; Marshia and Bill Lloyd):
“Brighton's oldest house is situated on a town lot that is part of a 200-acre Crown grant to James Richardson on Feb. 14, 1809 for Lot 1, Concession 1, of what was then Cramahe Township. He proceeded almost immediately to build a relatively small 1 ½ storey house near the east-west mid-point of the lot and backing onto a small tributary of what later became Butler's Creek. This property was sold to James Lyon in 1830 and then to William Butler in 1847. Ownership of the lot and house changed twice in the late 1800s and then in 1910 was acquired by the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Company, reportedly for the Section Foreman and his family's use. The Railway retained ownership until 1949, when it was purchased by Sarah and William Daniels. Thereafter ownership changed several times and in 1991 was bought by Marshia A. and William J. Lloyd.
The 1 ½ storey house was built on a stone foundation, without a basement, but with a crawl space accessed by a trap door. The structure and initial siding is believed to be hand-cut, thick spruce planks. A rear woodshed has since been converted to living space. A front veranda is believed to have been added later. A partially attached garage has also been added. About 50 years ago, aluminum siding was installed on the exterior and most of the doors and windows have since been replaced, albeit the upper windows may be original.”
